Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flows the springs of life” Proverbs 4:23.

Have you ever you wrestled with questions related to purity such as what’s allowed and what isn’t, when have you “gone too far”, and how can you know where that unclear and unstated boundary lies in a relationship?

Most of us understand God’s commands regarding sex, but what about the acts that may lead to it? Are they forbidden? Is it okay to kiss, and if so, at what point? Unfortunately, Scripture doesn’t clearly address these questions.

But that doesn’t mean you should languish in confusion or uncertainty. Rather, whenever you encounter a “gray” area, you’re provided an opportunity to draw closer to God as you seek His heart. In this study, I want to show you biblical strategies for building relationships that align with God’s perfect will.

Guard your heart. The first strategy is guarding your heart. In ancient Hebrew, the heart refers to a person’s core being. It’s one’s moral compass and the seat of their will and intellect, and it’s easily swayed.

Every interaction either strengthens or weakens you spiritually. Moreover, what you feed often grows. That means the more you watch sensual material and engages in sensual thoughts; the harder it will be to remain pure in your thoughts and your relationships.

The Scripture says the hearts is deceitful. That means it’s easy to convince yourself that wrong is right and right is wrong. This occurs often when married couples leave their spouse for someone else, claiming that God wants them “to be happy.”

This is also the plight of gays and lesbians who have convinced their deceitful heart that sin is right. When emotions and hormones become entangled in your choice, your thoughts and attitudes often follow.

This is why the Scripture urges us to “Keep our heart with all vigilance, for out of it flows the springs of life” Proverbs 4:23. God bless you
