Scripture: So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jona, lovest thou me more than these? John 21:15

Welcome to Heart2Heart devotion for singles. One question am mostly asked in my meetings with single people is, “How do I know that someone loves me? What are the signs of true love?” Here is a brief excerpt of what I tell them. May God grant you understanding.

The two or one sided test: Love is not one-sided–it can only happen in the context of two people in relationship. If you are the only one calling, reaching out and doing all the loving, something is wrong. If it’s not mutual, there is trouble. If it’s one sided, there is no love.

Be sure that this is not infatuation: Infatuation looks like love only that it is fake love. Have you seen counterfeit money? There is also counterfeit love called infatuation. Unfortunately, 90% of what most singles call love is infatuation. Be sure that this attraction is not infatuation.

Do they love you as you are? If this person knows about your flaws and still expresses their devotion to you, there’s a good chance that it might be love. If they are demanding that you change this or that or there can’t be a relationship, it means they do not love you as you are.

HEAR ME: Love will accept you as you are but won’t leave you as you are. Love has the power to change you even without trying. (I know this is deep)

The love language test: According to Dr. Gary Chapman, there are 5 languages of love: words of affirmation, quality time, gifts, acts of service and physical touch. If the person you are dating uses any of these love languages to communicate with you without seeking to after the last one we mentioned above (PHYSICALLY TOUCH), they probably loves you. But remember this: Love only works when it’s mutual. That means they will only speak to you with these love languages if you speak back to them in the same language.

The love and respect test: The relationship between a man and a woman as the exchange of love and respect. That is, while a woman needs to feel the love of her man, the man also needs to feel the respect of his woman. It will be hard for a man to love a woman who doesn’t respect him and it will also be hard for a woman to respect a man who doesn’t love her and that brings us back to the necessity of mutuality within a loving relationship. Only then will you be able to find out if this person loves you. God bless you
