“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do” (Ps 11:3)?
Welcome to Heart2Heart devotional. Some years back, a friend of mine decided to marry a lady out of sympathy. She just lost her father and he really felt pity for her so he decided to see her often to comfort her.
Initially, he never intended to get intimate with her but before you know it, he had moved past emotional comfort to sexual comfort, bonding so intimately with her till they almost became inseparable.
I guess he assumed he was the Holy Spirit whom Jesus gave to the church as our comforter. No one else can truly comfort another person except the Holy Spirit is involved.
When I saw how madly in love he was over this hurting lady, I finally confronted him by asking, “Who made you her comforter?” The sympathy he had for the lady is pushing him to do things he would never have done in his right senses.
Too many singles have messed up their relationship because they are making the marital mistake of marrying out of pity instead of love. HEAR ME: “Never start a relationship or marry out of sympathy”. Don’t ever let sympathy be what influenced your decision to marry a person.
Just because someone helped you when they were rich but now broke should not be the reason why you feel indebted to marry them.
Just because someone stood by you in your hurting season should not be the reason why you feel indebted to marry them.
Just because someone invested so much in your academics should not be the reason why you feel indebted to marry them.
HEAR ME: Marry because you really love them and not out of sympathy and debt repayment.
Stop trying to help a person by trying to marry them. It’s a suicide mission. Sympathy induced relationships are from hell and will make the couple taste hell. Never marry out of sympathy. Never marry a person out of pity.
Assist whomever you want to assist but make sure you separate your emotions of pity or debt repayment from marriage issues. This is God’s word to you this morning. Share this word with someone today and tell someone about this Hear2Heart devotional. Shalom!
